Free public programming supporting ASG’s spring exhibition, (your) body is a porous language : (our) embodied connections, includes engagements with curator and gallery director Alison McNulty, guest curator Edwin Torres, and several regional artists.
On April 26, Edwin Torres, with two poets, a movement artist, and a snare drummer will explore the relational territory and social engagements opened by the forms and languages inhabiting the gallery. Torres invites the audience to experience an embodied dialogue between language, listening, and the artworks on display.
There will be an informal gallery walkthrough and Q&A with Edwin Torres on May 2. Torres will introduce his Curated Reading List for our Open Reading Room program, discuss how his aesthetics as a poet/performer informed his selection of artworks, reflect on the development of a curatorial process, and explore the inspirations and aspirations underpinning the exhibition.
Join Jeanine Durning, a Guggenheim and Alpert award-winning choreographer and performer, for a free workshop in conjunction with our spring exhibition on May 16. Durning will share and guide the practice she calls “nonstopping.” We will use improvised moving and speaking to access, accept, articulate, and amplify the embodied material of ourselves. People with a curiosity to move and speak as modes of creative practice are welcome.
On May 23 at Ann Street Gallery, we invite you to a conversation between Renee Gladman, Marcella Durand, and Edwin Torres. Renee Gladman is an artist & writer whose work is in the exhibition, and Marcella Durand is a poet & scholar whose work explores intersections between ecology, art, and poetry. They’ll discuss how their work engages with porosity, and explore the exhibition's integrated architectures of language-making.

The event opens cross-disciplinary conversation unfolding in evolving, responsive rhythms and seeks creation and participation through a connective pulsing within the gallery's walls.

Join Jeanine Durning, a Guggenheim and Alpert award-winning choreographer and performer, for a free workshop in conjunction with our spring exhibition, (your) body is a porous language : (our) embodied connections. Durning will share and guide some proposals and scores for the practice she calls “nonstopping.” We will use improvised moving and speaking to access, accept, articulate, and amplify the embodied material of ourselves in the continuous present.
We’ll practice different ways in which this fluid material can be formed, shifted, reorganized, and played with in relation to known and unknown conditions. We’ll tune to the complexities of our unfolding ecologies, sharpen our responsiveness to our emergent materials, and empower ourselves to the poetics of our choices.
We will work alone, sometimes in pairs, and sometimes as a group. People from all disciplines and experiences are welcome, with a curiosity and desire to move and speak a lot as modes of creative practice. A willingness to not know why or what or how as a generative tool is very useful in this work.
Please bring writing materials, as we’ll do some writing as a way to track our thoughts and micro decisions. And please wear comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes you can move in.

Jeanine Durning is a Guggenheim and Alpert award-winning choreographer and performer described by The New Yorker as having “the potential for philosophical revelation and theatrical disaster.” Her work investigates the mutable potential and presence-making of moving bodies, and their conditions in time, space, and situation. Since 1998, she has created performances that blur artistic and aesthetic boundaries, and since 2009, her “nonstopping” practice has formed the core of her ongoing research, operating in the spaces between thought, perception, movement, and language. From 2010-2020, she toured her solo performance, inging (an ongoing experiment in non-stopping speech) which has been widely recognized for its expanded notion of choreography, exploring the structures and phenomenology of thought in extemporaneous movement and speech. Durning’s performances and choreographies have been presented throughout the U.S., Europe, and in Canada, including at NYU Skirball and BAM in NYC, Sadler’s Wells in London, and Dansens Hus in Stockholm and has been a guest lecturer of dance, performance and choreography at SNDO/Amsterdam, Movement Research/NYC, HZT/Berlin, SKH/Stockholm and many University dance programs in the States, including NYU and Smith College.

This lecture and reading will expand upon how their practices engage with properties of knowing and un-knowing in their work, discuss how porosity allows empowerment in the creative space, and explore the exhibition's integrated architectures of language-making.
